Hunter Appointed as Principal Contractor and Principal Designer on Refurbishment of Existing Equipment

The Compleat Foods Group appointed Hunter Safety as Principal Designer and Principal Contractor for a major refurbishment project at their Riverside Bakery site in Nottingham.

Works included a full overhaul and refurbishment of existing electrical and mechanical equipment within the facility, ensuring compliance with building regulations and maintaining operational efficiency. The project involved close collaboration with structural engineers to manage the integrity of the site during the works.

Role

During the pre-construction phase, Hunter undertook project preparation including site visits, review of the client brief, and collection of Pre-Construction Information (PCI). Site-specific health and safety documentation was produced, including the Construction Phase Plan (CPP), Traffic Management Plan (TMP), Waste Management Plan (WMP), and Environmental Management Plan (EMP), to manage onsite arrangements and risks. Pre-Qualification Questionnaires (PQQ) and competency assessments were completed for all contractors and subcontractors.

Hunter also attended project pre-construction meetings, reviewed Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) submitted by contractors, and set up the construction site with appropriate signage and a CDM office.

Throughout the construction phase, Hunter implemented a comprehensive Health and Safety Management System, including a Permit to Work system, and provided site-specific inductions for all personnel working within the CDM area.

Daily work activities were coordinated with the project team to ensure health and safety standards were maintained. All site Risk Assessments and Method Statements were reviewed and approved, while any incidents were investigated to ensure full root cause analysis and corrective actions were identified with support from the HSS Compliance Team.

Hunter monitored, inspected, and audited site safety standards, producing routine project reports, and attended project meetings to provide progress updates. Daily and weekly meetings were chaired to coordinate activities, provide clash detection, and plan look-ahead schedules.

The team continuously advised contractors on health and safety legislation and CDM regulations, maintained the Temporary Works Register with competent inspections, ensured adequate first aid provision, and facilitated the supply of necessary materials and consumables for the site.

In the post-construction phase, Hunter assisted the Client and Principal Designer in collating the Health and Safety File, including all Operations & Maintenance (O&M) manuals. The Health and Safety Management System and associated documentation were finalised and handed over, ensuring the site met all compliance requirements and operational standards.

This project demonstrated Hunter Safety Group’s capability to successfully deliver complex refurbishment works in a live food manufacturing environment, while maintaining the highest standards of compliance, safety, and operational continuity. By providing end-to-end support—from design and pre-construction planning through to handover—Hunter ensured the Riverside Bakery site was upgraded efficiently, safely, and in full alignment with regulatory and client requirements.

Summary

The collaboration between all stakeholders, combined with robust safety management, resulted in a seamless project delivery and a fully compliant, future-ready facility for The Compleat Foods Group.
