As Principal Contractor, we were responsible for the full pre-construction and construction phase management of the project, beginning with site visits, receipt of the client brief and pre-construction information, and attendance at pre-construction meetings. We produced all site-specific health and safety documentation, including the Construction Phase Plan, and implemented a comprehensive health and safety management system in accordance with current legislation and CDM requirements.
All contractors and subcontractors were subject to pre-qualification and competency assessments, with all risk assessments and method statements reviewed and approved prior to works commencing. We established and managed the construction site and CDM office, coordinated materials and consumables, delivered site-specific inductions, and coordinated daily activities to ensure programme and safety standards were maintained.
Ongoing duties included monitoring, inspecting, and auditing site safety performance, maintaining the temporary works register, chairing daily and weekly coordination meetings, and providing continual advice and guidance to the project team and contractors. We attended progress meetings, produced routine health and safety reports, and supported stakeholders on all CDM-related matters. Upon completion, we collated operation and maintenance information and assisted in the production of the Health and Safety File.
Overall, the project demonstrated the importance of early planning, clear communication and consistent health and safety leadership. By embedding CDM principles throughout the works and working closely with the project team, risks were effectively managed and standards maintained, contributing to the safe and successful delivery of the project.
